External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently made a statement in Dhaka, where he indirectly criticized China for disregarding legal obligations and violating longstanding agreements, leading to a significant loss of trust and confidence among nations. Jaishankar highlighted that when nations fail to uphold their commitments, it damages the relationships and trust between countries, and this damage is hard to repair.

Although Jaishankar did not name any particular country, his statement can be seen as a reference to China’s recent behavior in the international arena. China has been accused of violating several international laws and norms, including territorial disputes with neighboring countries, trade disputes with the US, and its handling of human rights issues in Tibet and Xinjiang.

Jaishankar’s remarks came during a virtual address to the Institute of Governance Studies at the BRAC University in Dhaka. The External Affairs Minister was invited to speak on “India-Bangladesh partnership and its global context.”

Jaishankar also discussed India’s relationship with Bangladesh, calling it an essential partnership for India. He acknowledged that Bangladesh’s progress was crucial for India’s growth, and the two countries shared a deep bond of history, culture, and people-to-people contact.

Jaishankar’s comments come at a time when India is working to strengthen its relationship with Bangladesh and other neighboring countries to counter China’s influence in the region. China has been making inroads into the South Asian region, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, through its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

India has been countering China’s influence in the region by offering alternative infrastructure development plans under the umbrella of its own connectivity project, the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

Jaishankar’s statement is a reminder to countries that they must uphold their commitments and adhere to international laws and norms. By doing so, nations can establish trust and confidence with one another, which is essential for building meaningful partnerships and collaborations.

In conclusion, Jaishankar’s statement highlights the importance of upholding commitments and respecting international laws and norms. It is a reminder to countries that violating agreements can have long-lasting effects on relationships and trust between nations. As India works to strengthen its partnerships with neighboring countries, it is crucial that all countries uphold their commitments to ensure stable and sustainable relationships in the region and beyond.
