Kathmandu, Nepal – The highly anticipated mythological film “Adipurush” has encountered a setback in Kathmandu as the screening of the movie has been put on hold in local cinema halls. The decision came after Kathmandu City Mayor, Balendra Shah, requested the filmmakers to rectify an error regarding the birthplace of the revered mythological character, Sita.

“Adipurush,” a grand cinematic spectacle directed by Om Raut and produced by T-Series, features an ensemble cast including Prabhas as Raghav, Kriti Sanon as Janki, Sunny Singh as Shesh, and Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh. However, the movie faced a hurdle when it was brought to Mayor Shah’s attention that a line in the film wrongly portrayed Sita as a daughter of India.

Mayor Shah took to Facebook to express his concerns, stating, “Until the line ‘Janaki is a daughter of India’ contained in the South Indian film ‘Adipurush’ is removed not just in Nepal but also in India, no Hindi films will be allowed to run in Kathmandu Metropolitan City (sic).” His post generated significant attention and sparked discussions about the film’s historical accuracy.

The issue at hand revolves around the depiction of Sita’s birthplace. Sita, a central figure in the Hindu epic Ramayana, is believed to have been born in Janakpur, Nepal. The city of Janakpur holds immense cultural and religious significance for Hindus, as it is considered the birthplace of Sita and the site of her marriage to Lord Rama. Therefore, any misrepresentation or distortion of Sita’s origins is seen as an affront to the sentiments of the Nepalese people.

Following the Mayor’s directive, cinema halls in Kathmandu temporarily halted the screening of “Adipurush” until the error is rectified. This decision not only affects audiences in Nepal but also impacts viewers in India, as the film’s release has been halted in Kathmandu Metropolitan City.

The controversy surrounding “Adipurush” highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity and accuracy in portraying mythological and historical figures. Filmmakers, especially those working on projects based on religious or mythological narratives, bear the responsibility of presenting these stories with utmost care and respect.

In response to the situation, the film’s production team is reportedly working to address the concerns raised by Mayor Shah and the public. They aim to rectify the dialogue in question to ensure it accurately reflects Sita’s heritage. It remains to be seen how quickly these changes can be implemented and whether they will satisfy the authorities and the Nepalese audience.

Meanwhile, the delay in the screening of “Adipurush” in Kathmandu has left fans disappointed. The movie, highly anticipated for its grand scale and star-studded cast, had generated significant excitement among cinema enthusiasts. However, the current setback emphasizes the importance of cultural sensitivity and factual accuracy in cinematic storytelling.

As the discussions continue surrounding the birthplace of Sita and the subsequent rectification of the dialogue in “Adipurush,” both the filmmakers and authorities are working to find a resolution that respects the sentiments of the Nepalese people while preserving the artistic vision of the film. Until the matter is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties involved, audiences in Kathmandu will have to wait for the screening of this mythological epic to resume.
