The Indian Army and Assam Rifles were deployed to contain widespread rioting that broke out across Manipur between tribal communities and the majority Meitei community. The unrest led to the displacement of over 9,000 people. In addition to the 55 columns of troops already deployed, 14 columns were kept on standby for deployment in case the situation flared up again, according to a defence spokesperson.

Flag marches were conducted in several areas, including Khuga, Tampa, and Khomaujanbba in Churachandpur, Mantripukhri, Lamphel, and Koeirangi in Imphal Valley, and Sugnu in Kakching district. The spokesperson stated that the flag marches were intended to demonstrate the presence of the troops and reassure the affected communities.

The unrest is believed to have been sparked by tensions between the tribal communities and the Meitei community over land rights and access to resources. The situation escalated quickly, leading to violent clashes and the displacement of thousands of people. The Indian government has stated that it is committed to restoring peace in the region and has urged all communities to engage in dialogue to resolve their differences peacefully.

The deployment of troops has been met with mixed reactions, with some residents welcoming the increased security presence while others have expressed concerns about potential human rights violations. The government has assured that the troops have been instructed to exercise restraint and follow standard operating procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.

The situation in Manipur remains tense, and there are concerns that the violence could flare up again. The Indian government has appealed to all communities to maintain calm and engage in constructive dialogue to resolve their differences peacefully. The deployment of troops is seen as a temporary measure to restore order and prevent further violence. The government has stated that it is committed to addressing the underlying causes of the unrest and finding a lasting solution that is acceptable to all parties.
