Chandra Arya, an Indian-origin Member of Parliament (MP) in Canada, has strongly criticized provocative pro-Khalistani posters that label senior Indian diplomats as “killers.” Arya, who represents the Nepean constituency in Ontario province as a member of the Liberal Party, hails from Karnataka. He expressed concern over the rising influence of Khalistan supporters in Canada and warned that the “snakes in our backyard are raising their heads and hissing,” suggesting that it is only a matter of time before they resort to violence.

In a tweet, Arya shared a poster promoting the ‘Khalistan Freedom Rally’ scheduled for July 8 and condemned the actions of Khalistanis in Canada. He accused them of abusing Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedom by promoting violence and hate. Arya also pointed out that these individuals were encouraged by the lack of criticism from elected officials regarding a recent parade in Brampton, where the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was celebrated. The MP expressed alarm that the Khalistanis were now openly calling for violence against Indian diplomats.

While appreciating the Canadian authorities for taking notice of the situation, Arya drew attention to the fact that the Khalistan supporters in Canada are becoming increasingly bold and aggressive. He used the metaphor of snakes raising their heads and hissing to depict the danger posed by these elements within the country. Arya warned that if left unchecked, it is inevitable that they will eventually resort to violence, highlighting the urgent need to address this growing menace.

The issue of Khalistan, a separate Sikh homeland, has been a contentious issue in India and among the Indian diaspora for several decades. Proponents of Khalistan argue for an independent state for Sikhs, primarily located in the Punjab region of India. However, the Indian government considers the demand for Khalistan as separatist and divisive, with potential implications for national unity and security.

In recent years, there has been growing concern about the activities of Khalistani supporters in Canada. The country is home to a significant Sikh community, and while the majority of Sikhs in Canada do not support the Khalistan movement, a small but vocal minority continues to advocate for it. These individuals have organized rallies, displayed posters, and engaged in other activities that promote the cause of Khalistan.

Chandra Arya’s strong condemnation of the pro-Khalistani posters and his warning about the potential for violence highlight the gravity of the situation. As an elected representative and an Indian-origin MP, Arya’s statements carry weight and draw attention to the need for action. It is essential to address this issue promptly to prevent the escalation of tensions and to ensure the safety and security of Indian diplomats and communities in Canada.

The Canadian government has previously stated that it recognizes the importance of freedom of expression and assembly, but it also emphasizes the need to balance these rights with the maintenance of public order and the prevention of hate speech and violence. As such, authorities must closely monitor and take appropriate action against any activities that incite violence or pose a threat to diplomatic relations.

Canada and India share a strong and vibrant bilateral relationship, which encompasses various areas of cooperation, including trade, defense, education, and cultural exchanges. It is crucial to preserve this relationship and ensure that it is not undermined by the actions of a small group promoting violence and hatred.

Chandra Arya, an Indian-origin MP in Canada, has criticized the provocative pro-Khalistani posters and warned about the growing threat they pose. His statements draw attention to the need for immediate action to address this issue and ensure the safety of Indian diplomats and communities in Canada.
