In a significant development, Congress leaders Surender Chauhan and Uma Kaushal were unanimously elected as the mayor and deputy mayor, respectively, of the Shimla Municipal Corporation. This victory marks the party’s return to power in the civic body after a gap of 11 years, ousting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from its previously held position. The duo was chosen following the swearing-in ceremony of the newly-elected councillors at Bachat Bhawan in Shimla.
Surender Chauhan, a trusted aide of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukku, secured his position as mayor. He is a seasoned politician and has served as a councillor from the Chhota Shimla ward for three terms. Uma Kaushal, a three-time councillor from the Tutikandi ward, was elected as the deputy mayor. Her husband has also been elected twice from the same seat, establishing their family’s political stronghold in the region.
An interesting aspect of the Shimla Municipal Corporation is the notable representation of women. Out of the 34 wards, 21 are held by women councillors, despite only 17 seats being reserved for women. Consequently, there was a strong demand among the councillors for one of the top posts to be occupied by a woman, reflecting the growing emphasis on gender equality and female empowerment.
However, the mayoral election was marred by an unfortunate incident. Supporters of the councillors and members of the media were involved in a scuffle, allegedly triggered by the former’s frustration over the lack of space at Bachat Bhawan. Abusive language was reportedly used, and some media personnel were even manhandled. Such incidents highlight the need for maintaining decorum and respect for the press during public events.
The Congress party’s victory in the municipal corporation polls was resounding. It secured a commanding majority by winning 24 out of the 34 wards. The BJP, on the other hand, could only secure nine seats, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) won a single seat. The election results were officially declared on May 4, confirming the Congress party’s triumphant return to power in the Shimla Municipal Corporation.
Following their election, the newly-elected councillors held meetings with senior party leaders, including Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukku and Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee president Pratibha Singh. These meetings took place at Oakover, the official residence of the chief minister, on Sunday evening and Monday morning. The discussions were aimed at strategizing for effective governance and addressing the key priorities of the municipal corporation.
The appointment of Surender Chauhan as the mayor and Uma Kaushal as the deputy mayor has instilled renewed hope and expectations among the residents of Shimla. It remains to be seen how the new leadership will utilize its mandate to bring about positive changes, improve civic services, and address the developmental needs of the city. With the Congress party back in control of the municipal corporation, there is a renewed sense of optimism for the future of Shimla and its residents.
