Supreme Court Grants Delhi Government Powers over Services, Except Public Order, Police, and Land

The Supreme Court has issued a verdict on the long-standing dispute between the Centre and Delhi governments over control of services in the national capital. In a unanimous ruling, the court has granted legislative and executive powers over services to the Delhi government, with the exception of public order, police, and land.

The decision has been hailed as a “huge win” for the people of Delhi and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Mayor Shelly Oberoi praised the verdict, and Kejriwal himself went to the Delhi Secretariat for the first time in many months to meet his cabinet colleagues.

The dispute over control of services has been a major source of tension between the Centre and Delhi governments, with both sides staking their claim to authority. The Centre had argued that services fell under its purview, while the Delhi government had maintained that it had the right to control them.

The Supreme Court’s ruling is a significant victory for the Delhi government, which has long sought greater control over services in the city. It will allow the government to have more say in areas such as education, health, and transport, which were previously under the purview of the Centre.

However, the court’s decision also makes it clear that the Delhi government does not have complete control over all aspects of services. Public order, police, and land will remain under the purview of the Centre, which means that the Delhi government’s powers will still be limited in some areas.

The ruling is a positive development for the people of Delhi, who will now have a government that has greater authority over key areas of public services. It remains to be seen how the Delhi government will use its new powers, but the ruling is likely to be welcomed by many residents of the city who have long been frustrated by the Centre’s control over their daily lives.
