Arunachal Pradesh: More Riew Village Households Sign MoU for Siang Upper Multipurpose Project

The Arunachal Pradesh government has received fresh support for the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) as 17 more households from Riew village signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement allows authorities to proceed with Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) activities.

The Arunachal Pradesh government has moved a step forward in the development of the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project with additional support from local residents of Riew village in Siang district.

Recently, 17 more households signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government. This agreement enables authorities to carry out Pre-Feasibility Report activities, which form a critical stage in assessing the project’s viability.

Earlier, about 62 percent of households in the village had already signed the MoU. As a result, the latest development ensures that a majority of residents now support the project. This growing participation reflects increasing confidence among the local community.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Tayi Taggu, Village Development Committee Chairman Talum Tabing, and Vice Chairman Tajan Taki. Officials appreciated the villagers’ willingness to cooperate with the government’s development plans.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein praised the community for its unity and trust. He stated that the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project holds significant potential to transform the region’s economy. According to him, the project can generate employment opportunities for youth and strengthen infrastructure.

Furthermore, Mein emphasized that the project will contribute to India’s energy security by adding substantial hydropower capacity. He also assured residents that the government will address environmental concerns and respect local sentiments during implementation.

At the same time, authorities highlighted that the PFR stage will help assess technical, environmental, and social aspects of the project. Therefore, the current agreements mark an important step before full-scale development begins.

Overall, the increasing number of MoU signatories indicates steady progress for the ambitious 11,000 MW project. Officials believe that continued cooperation between the government and local communities will play a key role in its success.
