Sarma Projects Strong BJP Performance

Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the BJP has already secured a strong lead after the first phase of polling. He claimed that the party effectively locked in around 110 seats early in the process.

Moreover, he expressed confidence that the BJP will achieve a “century” in Assam and a “double century” in West Bengal. According to him, the current political momentum strongly favours the party.

‘Unprecedented Shift’ in West Bengal

Sarma described the political atmosphere in West Bengal as dramatically different from previous elections. He said voter sentiment has shifted significantly in favour of the BJP.

Additionally, he noted that many voters who earlier hesitated now openly support the party. Therefore, he believes this shift could result in an unexpected surge in seat numbers.

Record Voter Turnout Reported

At the same time, Gyanesh Kumar highlighted a record-breaking voter turnout during the first phase. Both West Bengal and Tamil Nadu recorded their highest-ever participation since Independence.

West Bengal alone reported a turnout of 91.91 percent. Furthermore, several districts crossed the 90 percent mark, showing strong voter engagement.

Districts Lead in Voter Participation

Several districts in West Bengal recorded exceptionally high turnout figures. Dakshin Dinajpur led with 94.85 percent, followed by Cooch Behar at 94.54 percent and Birbhum at 93.70 percent.

In addition, Jalpaiguri and Murshidabad also reported turnout above 92 percent. These numbers indicate strong public participation in the electoral process.

Next Phase and Counting Schedule

Election authorities will conduct polling for the remaining 142 constituencies in West Bengal on April 29. After that, officials will count votes on May 4.

Therefore, the coming phases will play a crucial role in determining the final outcome of the elections.

Why Assam and Northeast Matter

Assam plays a key role in Northeast India’s political landscape. Developments here often influence regional alliances and national electoral strategies. Consequently, strong performance in Assam strengthens a party’s presence across the Northeast.
