Flood Death Toll Climbs to 10
Assam’s flood crisis deepened on July 20 after five more people lost their lives due to the ongoing floods. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed that the total flood-related death toll has now reached 10.
Among the latest victims were four people, including two children, from Jorhat district and one person from Karbi Anglong district.
Authorities also reported that two people, including a child, remain missing after drowning in floodwaters in Charaideo and Karbi Anglong districts.
More Than 3.62 Lakh Residents Affected
The latest ASDMA report states that 3,62,933 people across 16 districts have been affected by the floods.
Sivasagar remains the worst-hit district, with 1,57,727 people impacted. Charaideo follows with 1,04,475 affected residents, while Jorhat has reported 50,987 affected people.
Floodwaters have submerged 794 villages across 45 revenue circles, disrupting daily life and forcing many families to move to safer locations.
Thousands of Hectares of Cropland Underwater
The floods have inundated 19,099.59 hectares of agricultural land, causing significant losses to farmers.
The disaster has also affected nearly 3.89 lakh animals, adding to the challenges faced by rural communities dependent on agriculture and livestock.
Major Rivers Flowing Above Danger Level
Several rivers in Assam continue to flow above the danger mark.
The Brahmaputra River is above the danger level at Neamatighat in Jorhat district. Other rivers, including the Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang), Disang at Nanglamuraghat, and Dhansiri (South) at Numaligarh, are also flowing above danger level.
Meanwhile, the Dikhou River at Sivasagar has crossed its Highest Flood Level (HFL), increasing the risk of further flooding.
Relief and Rescue Operations Continue
The state government has established 101 relief camps and relief distribution centres to support flood-affected families.
Nearly 45,000 people are currently staying in these relief shelters.
Rescue operations involving the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), paramilitary forces, Fire & Emergency Services, and Civil Defence teams rescued nearly 7,000 people on Sunday.
Infrastructure Suffers Heavy Damage
Floodwaters damaged 29 roads and breached six embankments during the past 24 hours.
The damage has disrupted transport and increased difficulties in delivering relief materials to several affected areas.
Following directions from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Cabinet ministers visited flood-hit districts to assess the situation and oversee relief and rescue operations.
