Record Participation Marks Growth of Karate in Meghalaya

The 32nd Meghalaya State-Level Inter-School Karate Tournament 2026 has started on a high note in Shillong, recording its largest-ever participation. A total of 802 karatekas representing 126 schools are competing in the championship, reflecting the increasing popularity of karate among students across Meghalaya.

Moreover, this year’s participation has surpassed the previous record of 748 competitors from 104 schools, highlighting the sport’s steady expansion in educational institutions throughout the state.

Championship Provides Platform for Young Athletes

The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) is organising the tournament with the support of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs. Competitions are taking place at the Multipurpose Indoor Hall of the Sports Authority of India Centre located on the NEHU campus in Shillong.

Furthermore, the event offers young karate practitioners an opportunity to compete at the state level, gain valuable experience, and showcase their skills before coaches and officials.

Sports Officials Applaud AMKA’s Efforts

Meghalaya State Olympic Association Working President John F. Kharshiing attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest, while Finely L. Pariat, General Secretary of the MSOA, attended as the guest of honour.

During the inaugural programme, Kharshiing praised AMKA for maintaining one of the state’s most successful inter-school sports initiatives. Likewise, Pariat commended the association for its consistent efforts to promote karate and develop young sporting talent across Meghalaya.

Tournament Gains Importance Ahead of National Games

The championship holds added significance because Meghalaya will host the 39th National Games next year. As a result, the tournament is expected to help identify promising athletes who could represent the state if karate is included in the National Games programme.

Therefore, several senior participants will use this competition to strengthen their chances of earning selection for the Meghalaya squad.

International Medal Winners Honoured

The opening ceremony also celebrated the achievements of two Meghalaya karate athletes who recently earned medals at the South Asian Karate Championship in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Daniel Dabiangbha Warjri won the gold medal in the Boys’ Junior -68kg Kumite category, while Gideon Tympuin secured a bronze medal in the Men’s Under-21 Individual Kata event.

Additionally, John F. Kharshiing and Finely L. Pariat presented awards to both athletes. Pariat also announced cash incentives on behalf of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association to recognise their international success.

Tournament Officially Opens

Before the competitions began, medal winner Daniel Dabiangbha Warjri administered the athletes’ oath, reaffirming the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship.

Afterward, chief guest John F. Kharshiing officially declared the 32nd Meghalaya State-Level Inter-School Karate Tournament 2026 open, marking the start of three days of competitive action.
