Mizoram Schools Closed in 5 Districts Amid Heavy Rain, Strong Winds Continue

Schools across five districts of Mizoram remained closed on Wednesday as heavy rain and strong winds battered the state for the third straight day. Authorities shut educational institutions in Aizawl, Serchhip, Lunglei, Hnahthial, and Lawngtlai to ensure student safety. Continuous rainfall has raised the risk of landslides, flash floods, and infrastructure damage. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more intense weather conditions until Friday.

Schools Shut as Weather Worsens

Authorities across five districts ordered school closures as severe weather conditions intensified. Earlier, administrations in Aizawl, Serchhip, and Lunglei suspended classes on Tuesday. However, Hnahthial and Lawngtlai joined the decision on Wednesday.

School Education Director Angela Zothanpuii confirmed that officials took precautionary measures to protect students. As conditions worsened, district administrations acted quickly to prevent risks.


Heavy Rain Triggers Safety Concerns

Continuous downpours have significantly increased the chances of landslides, mudflows, and flash floods. In particular, the Aizawl district administration warned about potential rockfalls and infrastructure damage.

Since Monday, torrential rainfall and gusty winds have affected several parts of the state. As a result, authorities have remained on high alert.


Widespread Damage Reported

The State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department reported damage to more than 70 houses between Monday and Tuesday. In addition, storms damaged church halls, schools, and government buildings.

However, no casualties have been reported so far. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and assess further risks.


IMD Forecast and Rainfall Data

According to the India Meteorological Department, Aizawl recorded the highest rainfall at 57.8 mm in the last 24 hours. Mamit received 47.5 mm, while Khawzawl, Serchhip, and Siaha recorded moderate rainfall.

Furthermore, the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts, including Aizawl, Kolasib, Mamit, Champhai, and Serchhip, until Friday. Winds reaching 50–60 kmph are also expected in Kolasib and Aizawl over the next two days.
