Vehicle Stopped by Villagers

As the group travelled along the Gouri Nagar–Mashing Road, villagers stopped their vehicle. The crowd suspected the occupants of stealing cattle and questioned them.

Tensions rose quickly and confusion spread at the spot. During the confrontation, the vehicle skidded off the road.

Mob Assault and Vehicle Set Ablaze

After the vehicle went off the road, the mob attacked the occupants. The attackers also set the vehicle on fire, police said.

The victims suffered severe injuries, including burns and physical trauma. Emergency responders later rushed them to hospital.

One Victim Succumbs to Injuries

One of the injured, Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit, also known as Raja, died during treatment. He was the son-in-law of contractor Moranda Basumatary.

Doctors could not save him due to the severity of his injuries, police added.

Four Injured Under Treatment

The other injured persons include Prabhat Brahma, Jubiraj Brahma, Sunil Murmu, and Mahesh Murmu. Doctors admitted all four to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital.

Medical officials described Prabhat Brahma’s condition as critical. The remaining three continue to receive treatment for serious injuries.

Police Detain Suspects, Probe Underway

Police, fire services, and emergency teams reached the spot soon after the incident. Fire personnel doused the flames and police dispersed the crowd.

Investigators have detained several people for questioning. Police have started a detailed probe to identify those involved in the attack.

Victims Had No Theft Link: Police

Preliminary findings suggest the victims had no link to cattle theft. Police said rumours may have triggered the violence.

Senior officials warned that mob justice would not be tolerated. They said strict legal action would follow against those responsible.

Security Tightened in the Area

Authorities have increased security in nearby villages to prevent further unrest. Police also appealed to residents to report suspicions through legal channels.

The investigation continues, and police expect more arrests as evidence emerges.
