Pre-poll violence in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district has left one person dead and several others injured ahead of the upcoming by-election. Clashes broke out between supporters of BJP candidate Daochier I Imchen and Independent candidate Major Toshikaba (Retd) in Longkhum and Mangmetong villages.

Tension has escalated in parts of Nagaland’s Mokokchung district following incidents of pre-poll violence ahead of the upcoming by-election. The clashes occurred in Longkhum and Mangmetong villages on April 6 and involved supporters of rival political candidates.

According to police, supporters of BJP candidate Daochier I Imchen and Independent candidate Major Toshikaba (Retd) clashed in Longkhum village. During the confrontation, groups engaged in stone-pelting, which injured at least three people.

Tragically, one of the injured, identified as Imrongsungba Imchen, later died from his injuries. He was being referred to Dimapur for advanced medical treatment when he succumbed. His death has further intensified tensions in the region.

Following the incident, police acted swiftly and arrested 16 individuals in connection with the violence. Authorities stated that they have brought the situation in Longkhum under control; however, tension continues to persist.

Meanwhile, unrest also spread to Mangmetong village. Reports indicate that unidentified miscreants vandalised around 12 vehicles on the morning of April 6. As a result, fear and uncertainty increased among residents.

In response, security forces launched search operations in the affected areas. During these operations, police recovered arms and ammunition, which raised concerns about the potential for further violence. Officials also arrested one suspect in connection with the vandalism.

Furthermore, authorities have increased security deployment across Mokokchung district to prevent any escalation. Police personnel and security forces are maintaining a strong presence in sensitive areas to ensure peace and order.

Officials have urged political supporters and local residents to remain calm. They have also appealed for cooperation to ensure that the upcoming by-election takes place peacefully.
