Rahul Gandhi Focuses on Tribal Autonomy

At a rally in Karbi Anglong, Rahul Gandhi pledged to enforce Article 244(A) in Assam. According to him, this move will give local communities greater control over land, culture, and resources. Moreover, he stressed that protecting identity and traditions remains central to the Congress campaign.

Article 244(A) and Its Importance

Article 244(A) allows Parliament to create an autonomous state within Assam. As a result, such a state can have its own legislature or Council of Ministers. Importantly, the provision applies to tribal regions like Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. Therefore, Gandhi argued that implementing it will address long-standing demands for self-governance.

Gandhi Targets BJP Leadership

Meanwhile, Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He accused the government of centralising power and transferring natural resources to corporate groups. In addition, he claimed that such actions harm the people of Assam.

Furthermore, Gandhi alleged corruption and warned of an inquiry if Congress forms the government. He also described Sarma as a “mini Narendra Modi,” suggesting that the state leadership follows central directives.

Congress Announces Welfare Measures

Alongside his criticism, Gandhi introduced several welfare promises. For instance, he pledged ₹50,000 in financial support for women entrepreneurs. He also promised to provide 10 lakh permanent land pattas to residents.

Additionally, he announced free health insurance coverage of up to ₹25 lakh per family. These measures, he said, aim to improve financial security and support livelihoods across the state.

Assurance on Zubeen Garg Case

On another note, Gandhi assured that justice in the case linked to Zubeen Garg will be delivered within 100 days if Congress comes to power. Through this, he aimed to highlight accountability and responsiveness.

Political Impact

Overall, the promise to implement Article 244(A) adds a significant dimension to the election campaign in Assam. With issues like autonomy, welfare, and governance taking centre stage, the upcoming elections are likely to see intense political competition.
