The Sunurok Hills killings have prompted Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) to demand a thorough investigation into the deaths of three Meitei civilians in Manipur. The organisation has urged authorities to examine possible links between armed groups, internal rivalries and political interests ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
In a statement issued on October 22, TIM welcomed the government’s reported action following the October 19 attack. However, it stressed that investigators must establish the motive, identify everyone involved and determine whether the killings formed part of a wider conspiracy. The allegations require independent verification and must not be treated as established facts.
Sunurok Hills killings: Three civilians dead in attack
The attack took place on October 19 near Khongban Sunurok, close to the boundary between Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts. Three Meitei men died, while three others sustained injuries. The victims were reportedly collecting firewood when armed assailants opened fire on them.

The incident renewed concerns about civilian safety and the risk of fresh tensions in Manipur. Angry residents also brought two victims’ bodies to the Chief Minister’s residence in Imphal to protest the killings.
Meanwhile, authorities arrested three alleged cadres of the Kuki National Front (Nehlun), or KNF(N), according to reports cited by TIM. The organisation said two of the detained men had reportedly confessed to their involvement. However, investigators must establish the circumstances and verify all evidence before determining individual responsibility.
Sunurok Hills killings raise questions about militant links
TIM has called for investigators to examine possible operational links between KNF(N) and the Kuki National Front (Presidential), or KNF(P). The organisation alleges that the relationship between the factions could help explain the attack.
According to TIM, the probe should also examine the command structures of armed groups operating under and outside the Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangement. The agreement involves designated armed groups and the authorities.
Furthermore, the organisation cited the reported recovery of weapons, ammunition, poppy and a Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) identity card. It argued that investigators should examine whether these items point to wider networks involving armed groups and illegal activities.
However, the reported recoveries do not, by themselves, establish criminal links involving any particular organisation. Investigators must verify the evidence and determine whether it connects to the killings.
TIM also referred to the recent arrests of KSO-GHQ vice-president Jamkhomang Khongsai and United Kuki National Army chief Thangkhomang Haokip. Their arrests formed part of the organisation’s stated concerns, but do not independently prove its allegations about the Sunurok attack.
Political rivalry ahead of the 2027 elections
The Thadou body has also alleged that internal disputes within KNF(P) may have influenced the violence. It pointed to a reported rivalry between KNF(P) president ST Thangboi Kipgen and its Home Secretary, Jangboi Kipgen.
According to TIM, disagreements over political influence and candidate support in the Saitu and Kangpokpi Assembly constituencies may have contributed to tensions within the group.
The organisation has urged investigators to examine whether these alleged disputes had any connection to the October 19 killings. It also raised questions about possible political motives ahead of the 2027 Manipur Assembly elections.
However, these claims remain allegations made by TIM. No independently verified evidence presented in the available reports establishes that electoral calculations or factional rivalries caused the attack.
Therefore, investigators must establish a clear link between any suspected motive and the evidence collected during the investigation.
Sunurok Hills killings prompt demand for accountability
TIM has called for a comprehensive investigation into every credible lead. It wants authorities to identify the alleged perpetrators, examine possible accomplices and determine whether anyone planned or supported the attack.
Moreover, the organisation has stressed that public statements by armed-group umbrella organisations should not prevent investigators from examining possible connections between different factions.
The demand comes amid continuing concerns about violence and civilian protection across Manipur. The October 19 killings have raised fresh questions about security in areas near district boundaries, where communities remain vulnerable to armed attacks.
At the same time, allegations against individuals or organisations require careful scrutiny. A credible investigation must rely on verified evidence, follow due process and avoid treating unproven claims as established findings.
Impartial investigation needed to prevent further violence
The Sunurok Hills killings have added to concerns about peace and security in Manipur. TIM has urged the government to ensure accountability and prevent further attacks on civilians.
The immediate priority remains establishing the facts behind the killings. Investigators must determine who carried out the attack, whether others were involved and what motive, if any, drove the violence.
Finally, a transparent and impartial investigation could help address public concerns and strengthen confidence in the authorities. Any person found responsible must face legal action based on evidence and due process.
The allegations of militant links and political rivalry now require verification through the investigation. Until then, the circumstances surrounding the killings remain a matter for investigators to establish.
