Tawang Post Office Staffer Faces Embezzlement Allegations
Police arrested the woman following a complaint from the postal department. According to Tawang SP Tasi Darang, officers took her into custody on September 14 after completing the required legal formalities.
The postal department first identified the alleged financial irregularities during a financial verification at the Tawang Post Office on September 7.
Following the verification, Inspector of Post Office at Bomdila Postal Sub Division, H Nilamai Singh, submitted a written complaint on September 13.
Postal Insurance Premiums Account for ₹34.49 Lakh
According to the complaint, the woman allegedly failed to account for ₹39.25 lakh as of September 10.
The complaint stated that approximately ₹34.49 lakh came from premiums collected under Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI).
Postal authorities reportedly collected these premiums between January 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024.
However, the accused allegedly failed to deposit the money into the official accounts. The complaint further stated that she did not produce the funds despite repeated reminders from the postal department.
Additional ₹4.75 Lakh in Counter Cash Reportedly Missing
The complaint also identified an additional shortage of approximately ₹4.75 lakh in counter cash.
According to postal officials, the amount remained unremitted and could not be accounted for during the verification process.
The postal department reportedly questioned the staffer about the shortages. Following the questioning, she allegedly admitted to the shortage and submitted a written undertaking acknowledging the alleged misappropriation of public funds.
Police Begin Investigation
Based on the postal department’s complaint, Tawang Police Station registered a case. Officer-in-Charge N Angu took charge of the investigation.
Police subsequently arrested the accused and remanded her to police custody, according to the available information.
Meanwhile, investigators are examining the financial records and circumstances surrounding the alleged irregularities.
Police are also working to trace the unaccounted funds and establish the full extent of the alleged financial misconduct.
