Himanta Sarma has intensified his attack on Rahul Gandhi over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, accusing the Congress leader of attempting to blackmail constitutional institutions. The Assam chief minister has defended the voter revision exercise and questioned the opposition’s criticism of the Election Commission.

The remarks have escalated the political confrontation between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. Meanwhile, the dispute has brought electoral transparency, voter verification and the independence of constitutional bodies into sharper public focus.

Himanta Sarma Accuses Rahul Gandhi Over SIR

On October 12, 2026, Sarma accused Gandhi and the Congress of putting pressure on constitutional institutions while challenging the electoral process. He argued that political leaders should respect democratic mandates rather than question institutions when election results go against them.

Sarma specifically criticised the opposition’s protest over alleged electoral irregularities and its efforts to seek judicial intervention. He maintained that neither the Supreme Court nor the Election Commission should face political pressure over disputes concerning elections.

The chief minister also accused the Congress of applying different standards to electronic voting machines (EVMs). According to Sarma, the party questions the voting system when it loses elections but accepts the results when it wins.

However, these statements reflect Sarma’s political position and do not independently establish whether the opposition’s allegations about electoral irregularities are justified.

Why Himanta Sarma Supports SIR

Sarma has strongly backed the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, arguing that voter lists require regular verification to protect the integrity of elections. He has also called for a nationwide SIR every five years.

The BJP leader linked the exercise to concerns about illegal immigration and demographic changes in Assam and other states. He argued that authorities need accurate voter records to identify ineligible entries and maintain reliable electoral rolls.

Moreover, Sarma claimed that opposition to SIR could obstruct efforts to remove the names of people who are not legally entitled to vote. He has repeatedly connected the issue to concerns about alleged infiltration from Bangladesh.

However, voter verification must follow applicable laws and established procedures. Questions about eligibility, the inclusion of genuine voters and the deletion of names remain important considerations in any revision exercise.

For the Congress, scrutiny of the process centres on electoral fairness and the functioning of the Election Commission. The political disagreement therefore involves both the accuracy of voter lists and the safeguards needed to protect eligible voters.

Himanta Sarma Announces BJP Rallies Across Assam

Alongside his criticism of Rahul Gandhi, Sarma announced a series of peaceful BJP rallies across Assam. The programme was scheduled to run from October 13 to October 31, with demonstrations planned at district headquarters throughout the state.

According to the chief minister, the campaign would highlight what the BJP describes as attempts to undermine constitutional institutions and challenge the people’s electoral mandate. The party also intended to express support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his development vision.

Furthermore, the rallies provide the BJP with an opportunity to take its arguments about SIR and electoral integrity directly to the public. The campaign also signals that the dispute with the Congress is likely to remain a prominent political issue.

Nevertheless, the announcement of rallies does not settle the underlying disagreements over voter revision or the opposition’s allegations. Those questions require scrutiny of evidence, election procedures and the responses of the relevant authorities.

Rahul Gandhi, Congress and the Election Commission Dispute

The confrontation comes amid opposition protests over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and concerns about the Election Commission’s functioning. Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders have challenged aspects of the electoral process and sought judicial intervention.

The Congress has argued that electoral transparency and institutional accountability are essential to democracy. Its criticism forms part of a wider opposition campaign questioning alleged voter deletions and demanding answers from election authorities.

On October 12, opposition leaders also marched towards the Supreme Court amid the dispute. The legal challenge sought intervention over allegations concerning voter-list revisions and the role of the poll panel.

Sarma, however, portrayed these actions as attempts to exert political pressure on independent institutions. He argued that leaders elected through the existing electoral system should not selectively question its credibility.

Importantly, allegations from either political camp should not be treated as established findings without supporting evidence. The Election Commission’s procedures, relevant court proceedings and documented facts remain central to assessing the competing claims.

Himanta Sarma’s SIR Stand Keeps Political Tensions High

The exchange between Sarma and Gandhi highlights a growing political divide over electoral reforms, institutional independence and public confidence in elections.

For the BJP, SIR represents an important mechanism for verifying electoral rolls and addressing concerns about ineligible entries. The party has also used the controversy to challenge the Congress’s position on voting systems and constitutional institutions.

Meanwhile, the Congress continues to raise concerns about electoral transparency and the protection of voting rights. The debate has consequently expanded beyond voter-list revision into a wider argument about democratic accountability.

Ultimately, the dispute will depend on evidence, legal scrutiny and the implementation of transparent electoral procedures. As political parties continue to trade accusations, the key issue remains whether voter verification can protect electoral integrity while ensuring that every eligible citizen retains the right to vote.
