Nagaon bypoll has emerged as a significant test for the Congress in Assam, with senior leader Ripun Bora arguing that its outcome could have wider political implications. He has linked the contest not only to the party’s position in the state but also to national politics and the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

The bypoll has gained importance after the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat fell vacant following the resignation of Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who later joined the BJP. The Election Commission has scheduled voting for October 6, with counting on October 9.

Nagaon bypoll raises the stakes for Congress

For Congress, the Nagaon bypoll comes at a difficult moment. The party suffered a major setback in the 2026 Assam Assembly election and is now seeking to rebuild its organisation and voter support.

Bora’s assessment reflects the larger pressure facing the party. A strong performance in Nagaon could give Congress a chance to demonstrate that it remains an important political force in Assam. However, a defeat could intensify questions about its electoral strategy and organisational strength.

The constituency also carries political significance because Bordoloi had represented it for Congress. His move to the BJP has turned the bypoll into a direct test of whether the party can retain support after the defection of its former MP.

Opposition unity remains a major issue

The Nagaon bypoll is also being shaped by divisions among opposition parties. Congress had sought an understanding with the All India United Democratic Front, but AIUDF rejected the proposal and announced Rejaul Karim Sarkar as its candidate.

Congress leader Ripun Bora has accused AIUDF of acting as the BJP’s “B-team” and alleged that its separate candidature could divide opposition votes. AIUDF has rejected Congress’s alliance approach and decided to contest independently. These positions have increased the possibility of a fragmented opposition vote.

Meanwhile, Congress has also ended its political ties with Raijor Dal ahead of the bypoll. The decision followed disagreements between the parties and added another layer to the contest. Together, these developments make opposition coordination a key issue in Nagaon.

Nagaon bypoll and the 2029 Lok Sabha test

Bora has argued that the result could matter beyond the immediate by-election. In his view, Nagaon may offer an early indication of how Congress can recover before the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.

That assessment is political rather than a prediction of the final result. Still, bypolls can influence party morale, organisation and alliance calculations. A Congress victory would provide the party with a useful boost after its recent setbacks. Conversely, a loss could strengthen the argument that the BJP has consolidated its position in Assam.

The contest therefore has significance for both sides. Congress wants to show that its support base can withstand internal changes and opposition fragmentation. The BJP, meanwhile, will seek to convert the vacancy created by Bordoloi’s departure into an electoral gain.

Election preparations gather pace

Election preparations are already underway in Nagaon. Assam Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel recently reviewed arrangements with district officials, including election management, transport, materials and facilities for voters.

The Election Commission’s schedule gives parties a short and clearly defined campaign period. With polling set for October 6, candidate selection, booth-level organisation and voter outreach are expected to remain central to the campaign.

Congress is still finalising its candidate. Assam Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel said the party’s internal committees were discussing possible names before recommendations would be sent to the All India Congress Committee.

Nagaon bypoll could shape Congress strategy

The Nagaon bypoll will ultimately be decided by voters, not by broader political projections. Yet its importance for Congress is difficult to ignore.

For Ripun Bora and other party leaders, the contest offers an opportunity to assess whether Congress can rebuild after its recent electoral setbacks. It will also test the party’s ability to manage a fragmented opposition landscape.

Overall, the result may not determine the course of national politics or the 2029 Lok Sabha election on its own. However, a clear verdict in Nagaon could influence Congress’s confidence, organisational strategy and approach to alliances. That makes the October contest an important early test for the party’s longer-term political recovery.
