North East Hosts Three Key Venues for 134th Durand Cup

The decision to bring the 134th Durand Cup to the North East is more than symbolic. It’s a recognition of the region’s rich football culture and dedicated fan base.

Imphal, Manipur

After a short break, Imphal makes a strong return to the Durand Cup calendar. The city will host Group F matches at the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium, beginning July 30. Local favorites like TRAU FC and NEROCA FC will face off against Real Kashmir and Indian Navy in a set of highly anticipated matches.

Kokrajhar, Assam

In Kokrajhar, matches will be held at the SAI Stadium starting July 27. The stadium has become a regular venue since 2023. Kokrajhar, part of the Bodoland Territorial Region, continues to build a strong football identity with each edition.

Shillong, Meghalaya

Shillong kicks off the tournament as one of the opening match hosts. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will host intense group-stage clashes, giving fans early reasons to cheer.

A Multi-City, Multi-Team Spectacle

This year, the Durand Cup covers five Indian states—West Bengal, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Jharkhand. In total, 24 teams will compete, including:

  • ISL clubs like East Bengal FC, Mohun Bagan SG, Jamshedpur FC, NorthEast United FC, and Punjab FC
  • I-League teams and armed forces units

NorthEast United Returns as Defending Champion

NorthEast United FC, based in Guwahati, returns as the defending champions. Their group-stage matches will take place in Shillong, making it easier for home fans to show support. Their first game is scheduled for August 2.

Why North East Matters for Indian Football

The North East has consistently produced top-level footballers for India. Hosting the 134th Durand Cup North East edition honors that legacy and strengthens football’s future in the region.

Moreover, the tournament offers young fans a chance to witness elite-level football right in their hometowns. The exposure is invaluable, both for players and for regional development.
