Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the toss and elected to bat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Thursday. The match was played at the iconic Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata, West Bengal.
The KKR team made one change to their playing eleven, as they brought in England opener Jason Roy to replace David Wiese. Roy had previously played for Delhi Capitals in the tournament before joining KKR for the current season. With this move, KKR strengthened their top-order batting, which had been struggling in recent matches.
On the other hand, SRH made one change as well, as they brought in young pacer Kartik Tyagi, who had recovered from an injury. Tyagi replaced Khaleel Ahmed in the playing eleven, as the team looked to improve their bowling performance.
KKR, who had won their previous match against Punjab Kings, were looking to continue their winning momentum and move up the IPL points table. On the other hand, SRH, who had lost their previous match against Chennai Super Kings, were looking to bounce back and keep their playoff hopes alive.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Jason Roy opened the batting for KKR, and they got off to a good start, scoring 36 runs in the first four overs. However, Roy was dismissed for 17 runs by SRH pacer Sandeep Sharma in the fifth over. KKR captain Nitish Rana came to the crease and joined Gurbaz in the middle.
The duo played cautiously and rotated the strike well, building a solid partnership for the second wicket. They added 82 runs for the second wicket before Gurbaz was dismissed for a well-made 43 runs. Rana continued to bat with intent and completed his half-century in the 14th over.
Andre Russell, who had played a match-winning knock in the previous match, joined Rana in the middle after Gurbaz’s dismissal. However, he was dismissed for a duck by SRH spinner Rashid Khan in the same over. KKR’s middle-order then collapsed as they lost four wickets in quick succession.
Rana remained unbeaten on 80 runs, as KKR posted a total of 159 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Rashid Khan was the pick of the bowlers for SRH, as he finished with figures of 2 for 24 in his four overs.
In response, SRH got off to a poor start, losing their opener Wriddhiman Saha in the second over. Manish Pandey and Kane Williamson then steadied the ship for the team, adding 50 runs for the second wicket. However, Pandey was dismissed for 31 runs, and Williamson followed him back to the pavilion soon after for 26 runs.
The SRH middle-order failed to build any partnerships, as KKR bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Abdul Samad played a few lusty blows towards the end, but it was too little too late for SRH, as they were bowled out for 119 runs in the 19th over.
KKR won the match by 40 runs, with Sunil Narine being the pick of the bowlers for them. Narine finished with figures of 2 for 24 in his four overs and was well supported by Varun Chakravarthy, who also picked up two wickets.
