Artificial Rain in Delhi: A Promising Solution to Air Pollution

Delhi, the capital of India, is one of the most polluted cities in the world. The city’s air quality is often so bad that it is hazardous to breathe. One way to improve Delhi’s air quality is to induce artificial rain.

Artificial rain is the process of using chemicals to seed clouds and induce precipitation. This can be done by spraying the chemicals into the air from airplanes or helicopters. The chemicals cause the water vapor in the air to condense and form raindrops.

Artificial rain has been used in Delhi on a number of occasions in recent years. In 2023, the Delhi government announced that it would be using artificial rain to try to improve the city’s air quality ahead of the Diwali festival.

The Delhi government has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to develop a plan for artificial rain. The IIT has identified a number of cloud seeding sites in and around Delhi. The plan is to seed the clouds with chemicals on days when the air quality is particularly bad.

The Delhi government has also purchased two aircraft that will be used to spray the chemicals into the air. The aircraft are expected to be operational by the end of 2023.

There are a number of benefits to using artificial rain to improve Delhi’s air quality. Artificial rain can help to:

  • Reduce air pollution by washing away pollutants from the atmosphere.
  • Improve visibility.
  • Reduce the risk of respiratory problems.
  • Improve crop yields.

However, there are also some potential risks associated with artificial rain. These risks include:

  • The chemicals used to seed clouds can be harmful to the environment.
  • Artificial rain can lead to flooding.
  • Artificial rain can disrupt weather patterns.

The Delhi government is aware of the potential risks associated with artificial rain. It has said that it will only use artificial rain when absolutely necessary.
