The Teesta river has turned muddy downstream after a major landslide in North Sikkim partially blocked its flow, prompting authorities to step up monitoring along the river belt. The landslide occurred during the intervening night of September 5 and 6 near the confluence of the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers.
The incident took place in the Naga Forest area along the Naga–Tosa Road, opposite the Theng Tunnel in Mangan district. A substantial section of hillside along a newly cut road section collapsed, sending debris into the river channels.
Teesta river affected by hillside collapse
The landslide partially obstructed the flow of both the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers. For a period, debris temporarily restricted the Teesta river, while water accumulated around the affected stretch.
However, officials said the Teesta river has continued to flow and its flow had returned to normal. The natural channel also opened further later in the day, allowing water to discharge at a steady rate. The administration said the risk of a sudden downstream surge had reduced compared with the morning.
The change in the river’s appearance has also drawn attention downstream. Water levels at monitoring points in Sankalang and Phidang remained normal, although the water was reported to be muddy. Authorities have continued to watch for any significant changes in river levels or flow.
Major landslide triggers precautionary alert
The landslide has led authorities to maintain heightened surveillance along the downstream Teesta river belt. Police and district officials are monitoring the affected site, while personnel have been deployed to observe river levels and slope conditions.
The Police Control Room has also been directed to alert vulnerable areas in the lower belt as a precaution. Meanwhile, officials are assessing the extent of any property damage caused by the hillside collapse.
So far, authorities have reported no loss of life or injuries in connection with the incident. The situation remains under observation as officials continue their assessment of the affected area.
