The rescue operation to save 41 workers trapped inside the collapsed Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, hit another hurdle on day 6 of the ordeal. A high-capacity drilling machine that was being used to create a rescue tunnel stalled after drilling around 22 meters.

The machine is believed to have stalled due to the presence of hard debris in the tunnel. Rescue workers are trying to clear the debris and get the machine working again.

The rescue operation has been hampered by a number of challenges, including the instability of the tunnel, the presence of water, and the lack of ventilation. Despite these challenges, rescue workers are continuing to work tirelessly to save the trapped workers.

Here is a timeline of events:

  • Day 1: On November 12, 2023, a section of the under-construction 2.5-km Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi collapsed, trapping 41 workers.
  • Day 2: Rescue workers began drilling a rescue tunnel to reach the trapped workers.
  • Day 3: Rescue workers encountered hard debris in the tunnel, which slowed down the drilling process.
  • Day 4: Rescue workers continued to drill through the hard debris.
  • Day 5: Rescue workers reached a depth of around 22 meters in the rescue tunnel.
  • Day 6: The high-capacity drilling machine stalled due to the presence of hard debris.

Rescue workers are hoping to resume drilling as soon as possible. They are also preparing for a possible contingency plan, which could involve using a different drilling method or creating a new rescue tunnel.

The families of the trapped workers are anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones. They are praying for a miracle and hoping that the rescue workers will be able to save them.

The Uttarakhand tunnel collapse is a tragedy. It is a reminder of the dangers of construction work and the importance of safety. Our thoughts and prayers are with the trapped workers and their families.
