Budget Cleared for New Financial Year

The Nagaland Assembly cleared the 2026–27 budget through the Appropriation Bill, 2026. As a result, the government can withdraw ₹22,127.33 crore from the consolidated fund to manage expenses until March 31, 2027.

Moreover, this approval ensures continuity in governance and public service delivery across departments.

Strong Focus on Welfare Spending

The government has allocated ₹17,972.70 crore for revenue expenditure. Specifically, it will cover salaries, pensions, and essential services.

Notably, pensions and retirement benefits alone account for ₹3,928 crore. Therefore, the state continues to prioritise social security commitments.

In addition, sectors such as education, healthcare, civil police, rural development, and public works will receive substantial funding.

Infrastructure Push Gains Momentum

At the same time, the government has set aside ₹4,154.63 crore for capital expenditure. This allocation aims to strengthen long-term infrastructure.

For instance, the state plans to invest in roads, bridges, power supply, water systems, and urban development. However, these projects depend largely on timely support from the Centre.

Centre’s Support Remains Crucial

During the discussion, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio clearly highlighted financial concerns. He warned that the state may struggle to meet obligations without central assistance.

Therefore, Nagaland has projected a requirement of ₹4,500 crore from the Union government. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister expressed optimism after receiving assurances from the Union Finance Minister.

Additional Bills Strengthen Financial Management

Alongside the main budget, the Assembly passed three additional financial bills. These measures aim to streamline past expenditures and improve accountability.

  • Supplementary Demand for Grants 2025–26: ₹5,366.15 crore for additional spending
  • Appropriation (No. 2) Bill, 2026: Regularises ₹1,979.5 million for 2019–20
  • Appropriation (No. 1) Bill, 2026: Regularises excess spending for 2018–19

Consequently, these steps help maintain transparency in public finances.

Session Concludes on Positive Note

Finally, Speaker Sharingain Longkumer concluded the seven-day session. He announced the formation of Assembly committees and appreciated the smooth conduct of proceedings.

Furthermore, he described the budget as inclusive and forward-looking, aligning with India’s development vision for 2047.

Why Nagaland Matters

Nagaland plays a vital role in Northeast India’s growth. Therefore, its budget decisions directly impact regional connectivity, infrastructure, and socio-economic development.
