Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand has called for mutual trust, justice, dignity and participation from all communities as the state marked its 80th Independence Day on Saturday. He said peace must remain the foundation for Manipur’s development and long-term stability.
The state-level celebration was held at the 1st Manipur Rifles Parade Ground in Imphal. Khemchand Singh hoisted the national flag, inspected the Guard of Honour and took the salute at a ceremonial march-past involving 23 contingents.
Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand stresses mutual trust
In his Independence Day address, Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand condemned the incident reported in Kangpokpi district on Friday. The attack killed two Naga farmers and injured two others, according to reports.
The Chief Minister appealed to people across communities to rebuild mutual trust and live together peacefully. He said lasting stability would require justice, dignity and the participation of all sections of society.
Moreover, Khemchand said recent incidents of violence could create apprehension around peace efforts. He therefore urged people to work collectively towards restoring confidence and strengthening the state’s social fabric.
Peace remains central to Manipur development
Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand said peace is essential for economic and social development. He linked stability with the state’s ability to create better opportunities for young people, support farmers and entrepreneurs, empower women and protect its cultural heritage.
He also acknowledged support from the Central government in efforts to restore peace. According to the Chief Minister, dialogue with different communities is part of the broader effort to achieve lasting stability.
Meanwhile, he highlighted development work in both rural and urban areas. Healthcare services are being extended to remote hill areas through Mobile Medical Units and other government programmes. Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 was also cited as an effort to improve rural drinking water supply.
Welfare and security measures highlighted
Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand also outlined welfare measures during his address. He said 35 internally displaced people suffering from chronic illnesses had recently received financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh each.
Around 2.4 lakh beneficiaries, he added, had received Rs 91 crore through 17 social welfare schemes. An Integrated Monthly Pension Processing Scheme has also been introduced to improve the timely delivery of social security benefits.
On law and order, the Chief Minister said 477 new vehicles had been provided to the Manipur Police. He also highlighted the launch of the ERSS-112 emergency response system and the establishment of an exclusive Special NIA Court in Thoubal district.
Development priorities take centre stage
Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand used the occasion to outline several development priorities. He referred to employment, agriculture, education, healthcare and infrastructure as important areas for the state’s progress.
He said the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rojgar and Aajeevika Mission (Grameen) had increased guaranteed employment from 100 to 125 days, while wages had risen from Rs 263 to Rs 300. He also mentioned the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rojgar Yojana for formal employment.
In agriculture, he highlighted a bio-reactor unit established at CSIR-NEIST to support biofertiliser production and organic farming. He also referred to the planting of 15 lakh saplings under the 77th Van Mahotsav.
