Nagaland Government Addresses Border Tensions

Y Patton gave the update while responding to a discussion raised by MLA and Advisor Achumbemo Kikon in the Nagaland Assembly.

The deputy chief minister described the incidents reported on August 25 and 26 in the Mekirang/Neghrebil area of the DAB. He said the government wants to prevent similar confrontations in the future.

According to Patton, two village chairmen and a representative of the Lotha Lower Range Public Organisation allegedly faced assault during a protest on August 26.

Following the incident, authorities registered an FIR at Bhandari Police Station on August 27.

Peace Committee Activated

After the confrontation, the Wokha and Golaghat district administrations activated the Border Level Peace Committee.

The committee will improve coordination between Nagaland and Assam. It will also work to maintain peace along the boundary and prevent further clashes.

Patton said the Wokha district administration is coordinating with Assam officials to protect Naga villages, settlements and residents in disputed areas.

59 Families Get More Time to Vacate

The deputy chief minister also discussed the ongoing eviction dispute in the area.

During a joint eviction drive in August 2025, authorities served notices to 205 households. Officials subsequently evicted 146 households, while a court order stayed the eviction of the remaining 59 families.

However, the Gauhati High Court issued an order on August 18, 2026, giving the 59 families another 60 days to vacate the area, Patton told the Assembly.

Nagaland and Assam to Avoid Unilateral Action

Patton assured lawmakers that the state government continues to closely monitor developments in the DAB.

He said Nagaland is also pursuing the matter with both the Assam government and the Central government. At the same time, officials from Wokha and Golaghat are working together to reduce tensions along the disputed boundary.

Importantly, Patton said Nagaland and Assam would work to prevent unilateral eviction or plantation drives in the future.

He said authorities would establish a “proper mechanism” for such operations. Under the proposed approach, officials from both states would jointly conduct future drives.

The move aims to prevent misunderstandings and avoid a repeat of the confrontations reported on August 25 and 26.
