Manipur CM Seeks Urgent Action Over Manipuri Musician’s Death in Delhi

Imphal/New Delhi: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has urged Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to take urgent and stringent action over the alleged assault and subsequent death of 54-year-old Manipuri musician C. Vikram Singh in Delhi. In a D.O. letter dated September 8, the Manipur CM described the incident as tragic and deeply disturbing.

Manipur CM Writes to Delhi Government

In his letter to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Yumnam Khemchand Singh sought immediate intervention in the case involving the alleged assault of C. Vikram Singh.

According to the letter, Singh was allegedly attacked after objecting to disorderly conduct, shouting and public consumption of alcohol outside his residence in Kilokari Village.

Singh was described as a respected artist from the Meitei community. His death has triggered grief and concern among people in Manipur and across the Northeast.

Police Investigation Already Underway

The Manipur Chief Minister noted that Delhi Police had initiated an investigation into the incident and detained certain suspects.

However, he stressed that the seriousness of the case required prompt, stringent and visible action from the authorities.

Singh urged that the investigation be conducted at a high level and under the direct supervision of senior police officers.

Demand for Time-Bound and Transparent Probe

The Manipur government has called for an expedited investigation that remains fair, transparent and time-bound.

The Chief Minister also urged authorities to ensure that all those responsible for the incident, including alleged perpetrators and conspirators, are identified, apprehended and prosecuted according to law.

He said swift action would be important in maintaining public confidence in the justice process.

CBI Probe Suggested If Necessary

The Manipur Chief Minister also suggested exploring the possibility of transferring the case to an independent specialised agency such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if circumstances warrant it.

According to the letter, such a step could help strengthen public confidence in the investigation and ensure that the case receives an impartial examination.

Concern Over Safety of Northeast Residents

The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of people from Manipur and other Northeastern states living in metropolitan cities.

The Chief Minister pointed to existing social and political sensitivities surrounding the safety of Northeastern residents and warned that any perception of delay, bias or inadequate action could increase public anger and unrest.

He urged the Delhi government to strengthen community safety measures, particularly in areas with significant populations of students and working professionals from the Northeast.
