AIZAWL, MIZORAM: Heavy rainfall temporarily disrupted train services on Mizoram’s Bairabi–Sairang railway line, with waterlogging and muck overflow affecting sections of the track. Railway officials reported the disruption on October 1, particularly between Kawnpui and Mualkhang. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) suspended or modified several services as a precaution. Meanwhile, authorities deployed 20 buses at Bairabi to transport passengers from affected trains to Sairang and Aizawl. Officials said they expected train services to resume soon.

Train Services Temporarily Disrupted
Heavy rain caused waterlogging and muck overflow along parts of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line.
The disruption mainly affected the section between Kawnpui and Mualkhang. Therefore, NFR temporarily changed the operation of several trains to ensure passenger safety.
NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said the disruption remained temporary. Meanwhile, railway authorities arranged alternative transport for stranded passengers.
20 Buses Deployed for Passengers
NFR deployed 20 buses at Bairabi to transport passengers from affected trains to Sairang and Aizawl.
Passengers travelling on the affected Kolkata–Sairang and Silchar–Sairang services received bus transportation on September 30.
The move helped passengers continue their journeys despite the temporary railway disruption.
Four Trains Short-Terminated
Railway authorities short-terminated four trains on September 30.
The Silchar–Sairang and Kolkata–Sairang trains ended their journeys at Bairabi, close to the Assam border.
Meanwhile, the Sairang–Kolkata and Guwahati–Sairang trains ended at Hailakandi in Assam.
Two Train Services Cancelled
NFR also cancelled the Sairang–Guwahati Express scheduled for September 30.
Additionally, officials cancelled the Sairang–Silchar Express scheduled for October 1.
The Sairang–Kolkata Express scheduled for October 1 will instead originate from Hailakandi.
No Landslide or Track Subsidence Reported
Despite the heavy rainfall, railway officials said they had not reported any landslide or track subsidence along the railway line.
Therefore, authorities expected train services to resume after the affected sections became safe for railway operations.
However, continued rainfall could affect transport conditions in parts of Mizoram.
Heavy Rain Affects Several Mizoram Districts
Heavy rainfall has affected several parts of Mizoram, including Aizawl, since the evening of September 30.
The rainfall triggered landslides and rockfalls at multiple locations. However, officials had reported no casualties from these incidents as of October 1.
According to the Aizawl Meteorological Centre, Mamit recorded 69.6 mm of rainfall during the preceding 24 hours. Siaha recorded 46.5 mm, while Tlabung in Lunglei district received 39 mm. Aizawl recorded 12.2 mm.
Weather Office Issues Rain Forecast
The weather office forecast moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Mamit, Kolasib, Lunglei and Aizawl.
It also forecast light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Saitual, Serchhip, Khawzawl, Champhai, Hnahthial, Siaha and Lawngtlai.
