Officials met traders and market committee members to discuss congestion, illegal parking and violations of traffic restrictions. The talks are aimed at finding practical solutions before festive crowds and vehicle movement increase further.

Market coordination gains focus

The first meeting was held at Maharajganj Market on September 23. During the discussion, traffic officials highlighted several practices that can slow movement through busy commercial roads.

These included illegal parking, violations of no-entry rules, disregard for one-way traffic arrangements and the prolonged presence of heavy vehicles on narrow roads. Such problems can affect both shoppers and pedestrians, particularly during peak hours.

The Tripura traffic police initiative also seeks feedback from traders. Officials discussed local traffic problems with market representatives before deciding on measures to manage movement during the festival.

The approach places greater emphasis on coordination alongside enforcement. Traffic conditions also depend on cooperation from traders, transport operators and visitors. This is especially relevant around narrow market roads.

Traffic plans for the Puja rush

Durga Puja brings a sharp rise in movement across Agartala, putting additional pressure on roads and commercial areas. Therefore, traffic management has become a key part of the city’s wider preparations for the festival.

The Agartala Municipal Corporation recently held a coordination meeting with the Traffic Police and other departments. Officials reviewed roads, traffic management, power supply, civic services and related arrangements for the Puja period. The Traffic Superintendent of Police was directed to take steps to prevent congestion and maintain smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians.

The civic body has also planned additional manpower during the festival. Road repair and infrastructure work is being coordinated ahead of the expected increase in visitors.

Vehicle passes and restricted roads

The Tripura traffic police have separately invited applications for vehicle passes for authorised movement through restricted or no-entry areas during Durga Puja. The facility is intended for vehicles linked to essential services, government departments, media organisations and other approved requirements.

Applicants must submit vehicle and driver documents, including registration, insurance, fitness and pollution certificates, along with other required information. Officials will examine applications before deciding whether passes should be issued.

However, a pass does not provide unrestricted access to all Puja areas. Vehicles with valid passes will still be barred from designated no-vehicle zones around major Puja mandaps and congested locations.

The Traffic Department has also indicated that misuse of a pass or incorrect information in an application can lead to cancellation or seizure, with action under applicable rules where required.

Wider preparations across Agartala

Meanwhile, preparations are continuing across Agartala to address the pressure expected during the festival. The municipal corporation has been working with departments responsible for roads, power, water, sanitation, fire services and policing.

The city’s road network is also receiving attention. The administration has set deadlines for road maintenance before the festival.

Other departments are also reviewing essential services. The Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department has held discussions with business groups, merchants, fuel suppliers and other stakeholders to maintain supplies and prevent hoarding during the festive period.

Coordination to continue beyond markets

The market meetings are expected to extend to other important commercial areas, trader associations, unions and motor stands in Agartala. This would allow officials to identify location-specific problems instead of relying on a single traffic plan for the entire city.

For traders, cooperation with enforcement teams can help keep loading areas, road edges and access routes clear. For the public, better compliance with parking and movement rules can make busy markets easier to navigate.

Overall, the Tripura traffic police effort forms part of a broader pre-Puja coordination exercise. As footfall rises, the success of traffic management will depend on enforcement, public cooperation and continued communication with the markets that face the greatest pressure.
