Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Justice Rai

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai as the next Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

Justice Rai’s Educational and Legal Background

Justice Rai was born on July 12, 1964. She completed her early education in Gangtok and Kurseong before pursuing higher studies in Delhi.

She graduated in Political Science (Honours) from Lady Shri Ram College for Women. Later, she earned her LLB degree from the Campus Law Centre of University of Delhi in 1989.

After enrolling with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1990, she practiced before the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India.

However, she soon joined the Sikkim Judicial Service in December 1990 as Judicial Magistrate First Class-cum-Civil Judge. As a result, she became the first woman from Sikkim to hold the position.

Distinguished Judicial Career in Sikkim

Throughout her career, Justice Rai has served in several important judicial roles. These include Chief Judicial Magistrate, District and Sessions Judge, Registrar General of the Sikkim High Court, and Principal District and Sessions Judge.

In addition, she handled cases under major laws such as the NDPS Act, the Prevention of Corruption Act, the Sikkim Anti-Drugs Act, and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

On April 15, 2015, authorities elevated her as a permanent judge of the Sikkim High Court. Consequently, she became the first woman from Sikkim to join the High Court Bench.

She has also served as Acting Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court on multiple occasions.

Significance for Sikkim and Northeast India

Sikkim and Northeast India continue to witness increasing representation in national institutions, including the judiciary.
