Tripura VC polls are entering a decisive phase as the BJP and Tipra Motha Party prepare for possible alliance talks in New Delhi on September 4. The proposed meeting comes just weeks before elections to Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
Senior leaders from both parties are expected to discuss a possible electoral understanding and strategy for the polls. Chief Minister Manik Saha and Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma have travelled to Delhi, while MLA Ranjit Debbarma and Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma are also expected to attend.
Tripura VC polls move towards a key meeting
The talks come as the two parties remain short of a final agreement. BJP leaders have been assessing the party’s preparedness, while Tipra Motha has continued its nomination process for the Village Committee elections.
The possible Delhi meeting follows discussions over seat-sharing and the broader shape of cooperation. Reports indicate that the parties have not yet settled differences, making the September 4 talks important for their election strategy.
The BJP and Tipra Motha are already partners in the Tripura government. However, the Tripura VC polls present a separate electoral test in the tribal areas, where local political equations can influence grassroots governance.
Tripura VC polls and the alliance question
The main issue is whether the two parties can agree on an electoral arrangement before nominations close. The deadline for filing nomination papers is September 8, while polling is scheduled for September 28. Counting will take place on October 5.
Tipra Motha has maintained that any alliance must be linked to progress on the commitments made under the tripartite agreement involving the Centre, the Tripura government and the party. The agreement, signed on March 2, 2024, covers issues concerning indigenous people, including history, land and political rights, economic development, identity, culture and language.
A Joint Working Group or committee was also proposed to work out and implement mutually agreed points in a time-bound manner. The accord later helped pave the way for Tipra Motha to join the BJP-led state government.
Demands remain central to Tripura VC polls talks
Tipra Motha leaders have repeatedly stressed the importance of implementing the agreement. Ranjit Debbarma said the party’s position remains firm and that government commitments must be honoured for an alliance to be viable.
The party has also raised concerns about constitutional and political safeguards for Tripura’s indigenous communities. Its broader demands have included greater powers for the TTAADC and protection of land, language and cultural rights.
At the same time, the BJP has kept open the possibility of an understanding while preparing to contest independently if talks fail. This gives both sides room to negotiate, but it also means a final seat-sharing formula cannot yet be assumed.
Election preparations gather pace
The upcoming Tripura VC polls are significant because they will be the first such elections in nearly a decade. The State Election Commission has scheduled voting for 587 Village Committees under the TTAADC.
With the nomination deadline approaching, parties have limited time to settle candidates, seat-sharing and campaign plans. Therefore, the outcome of the Delhi talks could have a direct impact on how the ruling partners approach the contest.
Tipra Motha has already authorised its MLAs and members of the District Council to oversee the nomination process. Meanwhile, the BJP has been reviewing its organisational readiness through meetings involving senior state and central leaders.
What September 4 could decide
The September 4 meeting is expected to clarify whether the BJP and Tipra Motha can bridge their differences and enter the Tripura VC polls together. It could also indicate how much emphasis the alliance talks place on implementation of the tripartite agreement.
For now, no final alliance has been announced. The two parties still have to resolve questions over seat-sharing and Tipra Motha’s demands.
