The Tripura Mizoram border dispute has moved into a fresh phase after senior officials from both states held talks in Agartala and agreed on steps to examine the contested boundary. The latest meeting created a clear process for both governments to review records, conduct technical assessments and continue negotiations.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said he expects progress towards a settlement. He also indicated that the two states could hold another round of political discussions after officials complete the next stages of the process.

Tripura Mizoram border dispute enters fresh talks

Senior officials from Tripura and Mizoram met at the State Guest House in Agartala on September 10 to discuss the boundary issue. The Mizoram delegation reached Tripura a day earlier for the official engagement.

During the meeting, both sides discussed existing boundary records and identified areas that require closer examination. They also decided to create separate teams to study the disputed issues and gather the necessary documents.

The officials will use these records to compare the positions of the two states. This approach will allow both governments to address differences through evidence and technical assessment rather than unilateral action.

Technical teams will examine border records

The two states have also agreed to create a Joint Technical Team for the next stage of the process. The team will include the Directors of Land Records and Settlement from Tripura and Mizoram, along with the Director of the Survey of India’s Guwahati office.

The team will begin by examining relevant land records with the Survey of India. It can then move towards field surveys and, if both sides agree, future joint demarcation work.

Importantly, neither state will carry out unilateral demarcation during this process. This arrangement can help both governments avoid fresh disagreements while officials examine the available evidence.

Moreover, the Joint Technical Team will meet every fortnight at the Survey of India office in Silchar. Regular meetings should help officials compare records and resolve technical differences before they consider field-level action.

Tripura Mizoram border dispute keeps status quo

The two governments have also decided to maintain the status quo in the Phuldungsai Village Council area of North Tripura. Local authorities can continue routine development work there, while they must inform the other state about any special project.

The arrangement aims to prevent new disputes while the two sides work on the larger boundary question. It also gives officials space to examine the contested area without creating additional tensions on the ground.

Meanwhile, the Additional Home Secretaries and Directors of Land Records and Settlement from both states will act as nodal officers. They will maintain regular communication and coordinate the next stages of the talks.

Another Home Secretary meeting likely soon

Officials from Tripura and Mizoram are expected to meet again at the Home Secretary level in Aizawl after about two months. That meeting will allow both sides to review the technical team’s progress and discuss the findings from the record examination.

The proposed Aizawl meeting will mark another important step in the Tripura Mizoram border dispute. However, officials still need to complete the technical work before the states can consider a final settlement.

CM-level talks could follow

The latest official engagement could also prepare the ground for another meeting between Chief Minister Manik Saha and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma.

Saha has said that he and Lalduhoma have already discussed the border issue and recognised the need for dialogue. Their future talks could build on the work carried out by officials and technical teams.

Tripura Mizoram border dispute enters a decisive phase

The latest talks have not settled the Tripura Mizoram border dispute. Instead, they have created a structured framework for both governments to examine competing claims and work towards an agreement.

For now, officials will focus on land records, technical assessments and regular coordination. Both states will also maintain the status quo in the identified area and avoid unilateral demarcation.

The next Home Secretary-level meeting in Aizawl will provide an opportunity to assess progress. If the technical teams narrow the differences between the two sides, the process could eventually support higher-level political discussions.

Overall, the latest engagement gives the Tripura Mizoram border dispute a clearer path towards resolution. Both governments now have a formal mechanism to examine the boundary and address differences through dialogue, records and joint technical work.
