External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently engaged with the Indian community in Sweden during his three-day visit to participate in the EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum (EIPMF). The minister shared insights into the progress of the bilateral relationship between India and Sweden, focusing on the ongoing transformations in India and the numerous opportunities they present for Indians residing abroad.

Jaishankar’s interaction with the Indian community took place on Sunday evening and was filled with lighthearted moments. During the event, he responded to a question about the globalization of Indian culture by using the popular Hindi phrase, “aapke muh mein ghee-shakkar,” which roughly translates to “may you have ghee (clarified butter) and sugar in your mouth.” This humorous remark elicited laughter and further enlivened the atmosphere.

The minister’s use of this idiom was a delightful way to convey the positive and prosperous aspects of India’s cultural influence on the global stage. It showcased the rich and diverse heritage of the country, which is increasingly being recognized and celebrated worldwide. Through this phrase, Jaishankar highlighted the widespread appreciation and acceptance of Indian culture and its ability to sweeten people’s lives.

During his interaction, Jaishankar also discussed the ongoing transformations within India. He emphasized the opportunities arising from these changes and how they benefit Indians living abroad. India has been witnessing significant progress in various fields, including technology, innovation, and economic development. The country’s rapid growth and reform measures have opened doors for collaboration, investment, and enhanced cultural exchanges between India and other nations.

The minister’s visit to Sweden, as part of the EU Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum, further demonstrates India’s commitment to strengthening its engagement with European countries in the Indo-Pacific region. The forum provides a platform for dialogue and cooperation on issues related to security, trade, connectivity, and sustainable development. Jaishankar’s presence at the forum signifies India’s proactive approach to regional affairs and its desire to foster closer ties with the European Union and its member states.

India’s cultural globalization has been gaining momentum in recent years. Indian traditions, festivals, cuisine, music, and films have found a global audience and garnered widespread appreciation. This cultural outreach not only enriches the global cultural landscape but also promotes people-to-people connections and enhances India’s soft power on the world stage.

The Indian community in Sweden plays a crucial role in furthering these cultural exchanges and strengthening bilateral ties. The community members act as cultural ambassadors, promoting Indian heritage, traditions, and values while embracing the local Swedish culture. Their active participation in the host country’s society contributes to a deeper understanding and appreciation of India’s diverse cultural tapestry.

In addition to cultural aspects, Jaishankar also highlighted the economic opportunities available for the Indian diaspora. India’s growing economy, startup ecosystem, and investment-friendly policies have attracted interest from Indian professionals and entrepreneurs residing abroad. Many individuals from the Indian community in Sweden have successfully contributed to India’s development by investing, collaborating, and sharing their expertise.

Overall, Minister Jaishankar’s interaction with the Indian community in Sweden was a testament to the positive strides made by India in various spheres. It showcased India’s cultural globalization, the opportunities it presents, and the significant role played by the Indian diaspora in strengthening bilateral relations. The lighthearted moment created by his use of the Hindi idiom added an enjoyable touch to the event, leaving the attendees in laughter and further cementing the bond between the Indian community and the External Affairs Minister.
