Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently had a telephone conversation in which they discussed the recent Wagner Group mutiny in Russia and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The mutiny by the Wagner Group, a private military contractor, had thrown Russia into chaos and raised concerns about a possible coup.

During their conversation, PM Modi expressed understanding and support for the decisive actions taken by the Russian leadership to protect law and order, ensure stability in the country, and safeguard the security of its citizens. The Kremlin, in a statement, acknowledged Modi’s support for Russia’s efforts in resolving the armed mercenary mutiny.

The Wagner Group’s mutiny began on June 24 when the mercenary group seized control of the Army headquarters in Rostov-on-Don and advanced towards Moscow with the aim of overthrowing the military establishment. However, after approximately 36 hours, Wagner’s leader, Prigozhin, decided to withdraw the march to avoid bloodshed.

Apart from discussing the mutiny, Putin and Modi also focused on the situation in Ukraine. Putin informed Modi about Ukraine’s categorical refusal to resolve the conflict through diplomatic means. The Russian president assessed the current situation in the special military operation zone and highlighted Kiev’s reluctance to take political and diplomatic steps towards resolving the conflict.

During their conversation, both leaders reiterated their commitment to further strengthening the bilateral strategic partnership between Russia and India. They emphasized the importance of consistent implementation of major joint projects in various areas and expressed satisfaction with the substantial growth in trade between the two countries throughout 2022 and the first quarter of 2023.

The discussion between Putin and Modi highlights the close relationship and cooperation between Russia and India. Both countries have shared interests in various areas, including defense, energy, trade, and cultural exchange. Over the years, Russia and India have developed a strong strategic partnership, with regular high-level interactions and joint initiatives.

The mutual understanding and support expressed by Modi regarding the Wagner Group mutiny reflect India’s recognition of the need for stability and security in Russia. Modi’s acknowledgment of Russia’s actions to protect law and order demonstrates the close diplomatic ties between the two nations.

In terms of the situation in Ukraine, the conversation between Putin and Modi sheds light on Russia’s perspective on the conflict. The Kremlin’s statement highlights Ukraine’s refusal to engage in political and diplomatic solutions, indicating Russia’s frustration with the lack of progress in resolving the ongoing crisis.

Overall, the telephone call between Putin and Modi reaffirms the commitment of both leaders to enhance the strategic partnership between Russia and India. It also emphasizes the importance of maintaining stability, security, and diplomatic efforts in addressing regional challenges such as the Wagner Group mutiny and the conflict in Ukraine. The close relationship between Russia and India continues to play a significant role in shaping regional dynamics and fostering cooperation in various sectors.
