Tourist Killed in Shillong: A Disturbing Crime Scene

Raja Raghuvanshi, a 28-year-old tourist from Bihar, had traveled to Meghalaya with his newlywed wife to celebrate their honeymoon. They checked into a hotel in Shillong on May 28, hoping to enjoy the beauty of the state’s waterfalls and sacred groves. But within days, the couple’s dream holiday turned into a nightmare. Raja was found dead near the hotel under suspicious circumstances.

Unlike past isolated incidents in the region, the honeymoon murder in Meghalaya quickly attracted nationwide attention. The case was soon transferred to a special team under the East Khasi Hills district police, who launched a high-priority investigation.

Meghalaya Police Act Quickly as National Outrage Builds

Within 48 hours, the Shillong police identified three suspects with possible links to the victim. Based on call records and hotel surveillance, they traced the individuals to Bihar and brought them to Meghalaya for questioning. According to sources, one of the suspects may have had personal ties to Raja.

As public anger spread, especially across social media, the Meghalaya police reassured citizens that justice would not be delayed. SP Rituraj Ravi stated that forensic teams were conducting detailed tests to ensure every clue was analyzed thoroughly. With strong public pressure mounting, the authorities are expected to file a formal charge sheet within two weeks.

Widespread Response in Meghalaya and Beyond

In Shillong, candlelight vigils were held near Ward’s Lake and Police Bazaar to honor the victim. Civil society groups and local residents expressed sorrow and demanded better tourist protections. The honeymoon murder in Meghalaya has since prompted the state’s tourism and home departments to review their security protocols for visitors.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma condemned the crime and promised strict action. During a press briefing, he emphasized that Meghalaya remains a peaceful state and such crimes will not be tolerated. The state government is now working on new tourist safety measures, including the installation of CCTV cameras in all major hotels and the appointment of tourist protection officers in popular destinations.

You can track safety updates on the official Meghalaya Tourism website.

Impact on Tourism and Public Perception

Meghalaya has long been one of the most popular tourist destinations in Northeast India. However, the honeymoon murder in Meghalaya has made many travelers rethink their plans. Local tour operators and homestay owners report a noticeable dip in bookings since the incident.

This case has also drawn attention from neighboring states like Assam and Nagaland, where tourism boards are reviewing their own safety protocols. While crime against tourists is still rare in Northeast India, even one high-profile incident can harm years of trust and promotional effort.

A Call for Stronger Safety Measures

Instead, it should lead to concrete action—better background checks, hotel regulation, and clear communication channels between tourists and law enforcement.
