A Chirang protest was held in Assam on Tuesday as organisations, students and members of the public demanded strict legal action in an alleged gang-rape case involving a 16-year-old tribal girl. The three-hour demonstration took place at Kajalgaon as the police investigation continued.
The protest was organised at the call of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) and the Tribal Sangha. Participants demanded stringent punishment for those found guilty and urged authorities to ensure that such an incident is not repeated. The demonstration came amid fresh police action in the case.
Chirang protest calls for fast-track trial
Several Bodo organisations also demanded speedy justice and a Fast Track Court trial. The organisations called for a swift and impartial investigation while stressing the need to protect the survivor’s safety, privacy and dignity.
The Sentinel reported that protesters also sought legal support and rehabilitation for the minor and her family. They called for relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and, where legally applicable, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The demands came while the case remained under investigation. Therefore, allegations against the accused have not been established by a court.
Police arrest three accused
According to Chirang police, three persons have been arrested in connection with the alleged assault. The case came to light after a video purportedly showing the incident was circulated on social media.
Police said the alleged incident took place on July 24. The victim’s mother approached Runikhata Police Station on August 15 after learning about the circulation of the video and lodged a complaint.
Investigators said two accused were arrested within two hours of receiving the complaint, while the third was arrested later the same day. Police said the victim had allegedly been contacted through social media by one of the accused and asked to meet him before being taken to another location.
Police action during investigation
They took action involving the main accused, identified as Nasir-ul-Hussain. He was taken by the investigating officer to the location where police said the alleged crime began as part of a crime-scene visit.
According to police, Hussain allegedly attacked police personnel and attempted to flee during the visit. The investigating officer then fired at him, injuring him. He was subsequently apprehended and taken to hospital for treatment.
Police have booked the accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the POCSO Act and the Information Technology Act. Mobile phones were also seized as part of the investigation into the alleged recording and circulation of the video.
Chirang protest adds pressure for justice
The Chirang protest has added public pressure for swift action while investigators continue examining the allegations and digital evidence. Protesters also acknowledged the prompt arrests made after the complaint was lodged.
At the same time, the police investigation covers more than the alleged assault. Authorities are examining the reported video, its circulation and the circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt to flee during the crime-scene visit.
The Chirang protest reflects a wider demand that cases involving children be handled quickly, fairly and within the framework of law. However, the final determination of guilt will depend on the investigation, evidence and judicial proceedings.
Authorities face scrutiny over next steps
The Chirang protest has placed renewed attention on the authorities’ response to the case. Protesters have asked the administration and police to ensure that the survivor and her family receive appropriate support during the legal process.
